Week 202226

Close to ending the first half of the year, the company that manages the Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP) announced another throughput record. In May alone, the terminal handled 108,635 TEUs, going below the mark of 104,497 TEUs in August of 2021.

Last year, TCP handled more than one million TEUs and intends to increase this number by the end of 2022. The information is from the press office.

The frozen chicken meat segment continues to be the terminal’s main export product. Paranaguá is considered the world leader in this segment, with approximately 1,957 thousand tonnes exported in 2021 – more than seen in large ports, such as Savannah in the USA. In the first four months of this year, the export of the product by TCP increased by 8% compared to the same period last year.

“To meet this demand, we are expanding our reefer area by 43%. It will now have 5,178 outlets for powering and storing containers,” adds Thomas Lima, commercial and institutional director at TCP.

Frozen cargo operations led to a different record in May: the largest number of reefer containers handled on a single vessel. The feat occurred on the ship Cap San Augustin, owned by Maersk, with 805 reefer containers boarded on May 20.

Vessels are not the only transportation modals in evidence at the terminal. The use of trains is one of the main features of TCP, which currently uses rails in 23% of all export operations. In May, TCP container throughput totaled 16,972 TEUs, the largest volume transported by train in Paranaguá.

Part of this increase is due to the terminal’s success with the most extensive intermodal logistics project in the world, which was dedicated to a single customer in the container market. “With new projects launched in collaboration with major exporters in 2021, the amount of containers handled on the railroad is expected to double by 2025,” Lima said.

“We recently announced a R$370 million port investment plan, which includes enhancements to position TCP at the forefront of logistics solutions, offering customized alternatives from client to client,” concludes Thomas.
