Paraguay has expanded its presence in the United Kingdom market with frozen bovine fetal serum, an important step for Paraguay’s livestock industry. On February 14, the first export of 1,000 kg of the item took place, having the European country and Uruguay as final destinations, reported the National Service of Animal Quality and Health (Senacsa).

Bovine fetal serum (BFS) is commonly used in cell cultures to provide essential nutrients and growth factors. It is especially valuable in researching and producing biotechnological products such as vaccines and medicines. It is also used in cellular and molecular biology studies to maintain and cultivate cells under controlled conditions, explained officials from the institution.

Two Paraguayan companies are exporting this product. One of them, Biogan SRL, began exporting to the French market in 2019. Later, River City Paraguay SA joined in 2023, entering the markets of Germany and the United Kingdom.

During 2023, over 51,000 kilograms of bovine fetal serum were exported to Germany, France, Uruguay, and the United Kingdom, with a total sales value exceeding $7 million, according to Senacsa data.

So far in 2024, the value of bovine fetal serum exports has already surpassed $1 million, with over 13,000 kilograms sent to Uruguay and the United Kingdom.

These figures reflect continuous growth in exports of this product, demonstrating the potential and competitiveness of Paraguay’s livestock industry in the international market.

The total revenue for the country over the past 5 years from this product exceeds $32 million, according to official data.
