Last week, representatives from the Paraguayan automotive sector met with officials from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) to discuss the launch of a plan for manufacturing electric buses in Paraguay. The plan focuses on exporting these buses to Brazil and other Mercosur countries.

During the meeting, the deputy minister at MIC, Francisco Ruiz Díaz, and the deputy minister of Transport, Oscar Stark, emphasized the benefits provided by Economic Complementation Agreement No. 74, signed with Brazil, which includes a zero export rate for electric vehicles produced in Paraguay.

Currently, Paraguay is collaborating with Asian partners such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan to build an electric vehicle industry in the country. Paraguay offers advantages such as a low tax burden, affordable energy for the industrial sector, and a skilled workforce.

The meeting focused on four key actions for the sector, including cooperation for the industrialization, assembly, and production of electric buses in Paraguay, knowledge transfer between Paraguayan and Taiwanese companies, enhancing access to the regional market, and financing for project implementation, as highlighted by the MIC in a statement.

Under Economic Complementation Agreement No. 74, Paraguay can export up to ten thousand electric vehicles per year to the Brazilian market at a zero rate. A production pole is expected to be consolidated in the border region, where initiatives to promote industrialization are already underway.
