According to governmental data, the volume of papaya exported by Brazil has declined since June. In August, for example, the volume shipped reached 3,000 tonnes, down 3% from July and 21% lower year-on-year.

Sources familiar with the market reported that the declining trend comes from the lower national output due to the colder-than-usual winter, which slows down maturation, and the previous reductions in crop areas due to phytosanitary problems and high production costs.

In August, the main export destinations were: Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, which bought around 2 thousand tonnes in August, representing 67% of the total exported by Brazil. For the coming months, Brazilian papaya exports are expected to remain timid, as there is no forecast of a considerable increase in supply.
