Norwegian seafood exports total BRL 6.6 billion, Brazil is one main buyer

Strong global demand for Norwegian seafood lifted the value of exports in May to the second-highest in a single month, only behind March this year. “Rising export prices, mostly for salmon but also for trout, cod, Saithe, haddock, and herring, are the main reason for the hike in value earned,” says Norwegian Fisheries Council interim CEO Børge Grønbech.

The value of exports from January to May exceeded that of 2012 as a whole

The total value of exports in the first five months of 2022 was BRL 31 billion, representing an increase of 30% compared to last year.

“To put it in perspective: throughout 2012, Norwegian seafood exports totaled BRL 28 billion. After only five months in 2022, we have already surpassed this level, which is exemplary of Norway’s seafood export adventure over the last ten years,” says Grønbech.

Historically high prices for dried salted fish

Norway exported a total of 8,100 tonnes of fish worth BRL298 million in May. The value of exports increased by BRL 157 million, or 112%, compared to the same period last year. Export volume increased by 45%. For Norwegian Cod, Gadus morhua, and Norwegian dry salted Saithe, the export price has never been higher, with prices of BRL 53 and BRL 26 per kg, respectively.

Portugal, Brazil, and Congo were the biggest markets for Norway’s dried salted fish in May. In the fifth month of the year, the volume of cod exports to Portugal increased by 75% to a total of 2,800 tonnes. In Brazil, the dry salted Saithe and cod volume increased by 55% and 147%, respectively, to 900 and 250 tons.

Weakened Norwegian Krone

“A weaker Norwegian krone compared to the euro and the Brazilian real adds to Norwegian currency inflation. It increases the payment capability of purchasers in our most significant markets,” says the Norwegian Fisheries Council seafood expert Eivind Hestvik Braekkan.
