It is worth noting that in the first months of the year there was a recovery in foreign trade, which suffered from the consequences of the pandemic caused by Covid-10 in 2020. In recent months, however, several factors hampered the growth of imports and exports, such as the shortage of containers, the high cost of freight and the disorganization of world trade.

Uruguay stands out in the region

Unlike other countries on the East Coast of South America, Uruguay maintained considerable growth in both imports and exports.

In the October 2021/2020 comparison, imports grew 54%. In the accumulated result for the first ten months of the year, the growth was 29%.

The biggest increases in products imported by Uruguay are related to fuels and mineral oils, the automotive sector, and materials such as iron and aluminum.

Uruguayan exports in October grew 24% compared to the same month in 2020. In the accumulated result for the first ten months of the year, growth was 9%. Meat and wood drove export growth.

For the next few months, the region’s foreign trade should be affected by factors such as the elections in Brazil and the consequences on international trade from the Ômicron variant.
