The Port of Suape, on the southern coast of Pernambuco, is set to receive a new container terminal that is expected to double the capacity of the port complex and create over 1,700 jobs, according to the state government.

On Monday, October 16, the new structure, set to begin construction in 2024 and be completed by 2026, received the green light. The initial investment in the terminal’s implementation is R$1.6 billion.

The new terminal will be established and managed by APM Terminals, a company that is a subsidiary of the Danish conglomerate A.P. Moller-Maersk.

The authorization was signed by the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, the Governor, Raquel Lyra (PSDB), and the President of APM Terminals, Aristides Júnior.

The construction alone is expected to create a thousand new jobs. Once the container terminal is fully operational, 1,700 jobs will be vacant.

According to Raquel Lyra, the increased cargo capacity at the Suape Port will open up new distribution routes for goods both within Brazil and internationally.

“As we initially double container capacity, we strive to add value and gain a competitive edge, as this port and terminal aim to operate even more efficiently than they do today. We will genuinely enable a reduction in the cost of our operations,” stated the governor.

She also noted that sectors such as automobile exports are expected to be directly impacted. Additionally, the export of fruits produced in the Sertão region will be routed through Suape instead of the Pecém Port in São Gonçalo do Amarante, where it is currently handled.
