Montevideo Port achieved a new record in container throughput in the month of August, moving a total of 64,620 units. This surpasses the historical mark reached in June 2023, which was 60,416 units.

Juan Curbelo, President of the National Ports Administration (ANP), highlighted that in 2023, despite the decrease in Uruguayan exports due to various factors, container throughput “maintains a positive and steady growth trend.”

“We are very pleased with the container throughput. We had very good July and August months, with August being a historic month for ANP,” he stated.

In the first half of the year, between loading, unloading, transit, and transshipment, a total of 299,508 containers (520,017 TEUs) were handled, with May and June being the months with the highest activity at the docks and terminals.

The chart below compares the import and export movement of containers at the capital of Uruguay between Jan 2019 and Jul 2023. The data is from the DataLiner maritime intelligence service.

Curbelo further detailed that the new container throughput record implies a cumulative increase of 4.4% in TEUs compared to August 2022.

He explained that these numbers are the result of trade policies, management, and investment in infrastructure that have attracted cargo from the region.

“It is the policy we have implemented to transform the Port of Montevideo into the port hub of the Rio de la Plata, and in this sense, it is essential not to depend only on our imports and exports but also on cargo from the region,” said the head of ANP.

Additionally, he stated that shipping companies and shipowners choose Uruguay and the Port of Montevideo “due to its favorable legal environment, business stability, quality terminal, and operator services, among other elements that contribute to competitiveness and cost reduction in their scales.”

Finally, the increase in cargo activity at the Port of Montevideo is also attributed to the recovery of shipments arriving from Paraguay, which come by barges through the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway. In previous years, due to operational difficulties, these goods were being redirected to ports in Argentina.
