Silvio Costa Filho, the Minister of Ports and Airports, announced on October 23rd, new truck parking areas at the Port of Santos, with a total of 260 parking spaces. This initiative marks the first measure taken to address an issue that has endured for over a decade. The lack of designated parking spaces was a concern raised by truck drivers during the minister’s last visit to the region in October.

Situated on Governador Mário Covas Junior Avenue, the first area, where the minister addressed the press, spans approximately 26.3 thousand m² and accommodates 180 spaces. The second area is adjacent to the former Lloyd Bratti yard, covering around 8.4 thousand m² with 80 parking spaces.

While the estimated lack of parking spaces stands around the thousand figure, since not all trucks park at the same time, experts from the Santos Port Authority (APS) argue that around 600 new spaces suffice. Thus, these 260 new spaces meet nearly half of the demand.

Silvio Costa Filho was joined by regional trucking union leaders, the president of the Santos Port Authority (APS), Anderson Pomini, and the mayor of Santos, Rogério Santos.

Anderson Pomini, president of the Santos Port Authority (APS), mentioned that they are considering using an area near the Mário Covas Viaduct, the intersection of the Imigrantes Highway with the Anchieta Highway in Cubatão to resolve the issue of insufficient truck parking once and for all.

While a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is being prepared for this permanent yard, interim solutions are also being considered. Negotiations are underway to utilize the Scrap Yard of the Santos Port Authority, an area of approximately 8 thousand m² (60 spaces). However, this solution is still under internal consideration.

BTP

Silvio Costa Filho also visited the Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP), operating at the Port of Santos for the past ten years. The company, which presented its demands to the minister, disclosed plans for investing R$1.5 billion in the port.

Minister Silvio Costa Filho emphasized the significance of BTP and highlighted that the logistics sector in Brazil is currently experiencing a pivotal moment, with anticipated investments of around R$80 billion, with repercussions on ports and airports.
