Maersk prioritizes ‘door-to-door’ logistics in Brazil

Maersk, the world’s largest maritime shipping group, is focused on verticalizing its operations in Brazil and enabling “door-to-door” logistics for its customers, according to Vincent Clerc, the company’s global executive vice president.

Today, the company already has a strong presence in the country. In addition to the long-haul shipping service centered on containers, Maersk has a cabotage arm and operates port terminals in Santos (SP), Itajaí (SC), Itapoá (SC), and Pecém (CE). The idea is to expand the on-shore structures by investing in distribution centers, warehouses, digital solutions, and customs clearance services. In addition, the company returned to air freight in the country.

“The focus will be investments demanded by customers and solutions to simplify the supply chain. The orientation will be the users’ needs, not the search for a specific asset or structure”, says Robbert Van Trooijen, who runs the company’s operations in Latin America.

An example of this strategy is the recently announced three-year agreement with Braskem. Maersk will handle the entire petrochemical supply chain globally, including a new terminal at the Port of Singapore.

“For companies operating in Latin America, both importers and exporters, logistics services are more expensive than in more mature markets. Our objective is to develop the infrastructure, whether technology or storage, to reduce costs,” says Clerc.

The expansion of the group’s activities has even reached e-commerce, with deliveries to the final consumer, but only in North America. In Latin America, the offer of this type of service is complex and should not be implemented in the short term, but it is on the radar – and Brazil tends to be the first market in the region in this case, says Trooijen.
