The project known as Capricorn Bioceanic Corridor, a multimodal infrastructure that links the ports of Paranaguá to Antofagasta, will reduce the freight of Brazilian products to the Asian coast by 30%. In addition, the connection between the Atlantic and the Pacific, which will run through Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Chile, will reduce the maritime route for goods bound for Asian and African countries by almost 10,000 kilometers.

This project was introduced on April 27 at the Cascavel Commercial and Industrial Association (Acic). From May 11th to 14th, more details will be discussed at the International Forum on Sustainable Multimodal Logistics (Films).

The concept of a corridor connecting the four nations via various types of transportation is not new. It’s been a point of contention for at least two decades. In light of this, Brazilian specialists examined the feasibility of eleven critical routes for the country, with the Capricorn project being the most technically, commercially, and environmentally viable. Certain features, such as 4,760 kilometers of railroads, 4,183 kilometers of highways, 2,800 kilometers of waterway routes, one canal lock, 17 multimodal ports, and four integrated centers, will be required to make the corridor possible.

The Brazilian train track that will compose the project is the Nova Ferroeste railway, with an extension of 1,304 kilometers between Paranaguá and Maracaju, in Mato Grosso do Sul’s hinterland. To lure investors, the project, which is expected to cost US$ 9.5 billion, offers freight savings, shorter distances and lesser times between destinations, as well as a safer passage across coastal zones.

“The transit time of a container between Cascavel and the Port of Paranaguá will be lowered from four days to 20 hours with Nova Ferroeste,” João Arthur recalled, adding that the stock exchange tender will take place in the second half of the year. In May, road constraints, tolls, and simulations will be discussed at Films.
