The Port of Rio Grande is about to complete the maintenance dredging of its access channel; currently, the project is 73% finalized, garnering expectations for completion by the end of the month. The maintenance dredging initiative commenced in November.

So far, the dredger Utrecht has removed two million cubic meters of sediments, equivalent to 205 complete cycles, including both the dredging and round-trip journeys to the disposal site, located 17 kilometers off the coast.

All dredged material is being deposited in an area licensed by IBAMA, and the work is being conducted in accordance with the environmental standards established by federal law. Studies performed over two cycles indicate that the project’s execution has not caused any adverse environmental impacts.

Portos RS strives to conduct annual dredging operations, aiming to reduce sediment buildup in areas critical for larger vessels to dock at the Port of Rio Grande. This marks the second maintenance dredging since Portos RS assumed the administration of the State’s Public Ports on March 2, 2022.
