According to the Brazilian Association of the Personal Hygiene, Perfumery, and Cosmetics Industry (ABIHPEC), the international trade flow of personal hygiene, perfumery, and cosmetics products reached the figure of USD 1.74 billion in the consolidated data from January to December 2023. The value represents a 14.5% increase from 2022. Exports surged 17.4% and generated a record USD 911.2 million.

In terms of imports, the year-end result was USD 830.4 million, a 12.1% increase. The trade balance closed with a surplus of USD 80.8 million, growing by 130.2% compared to the previous year.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Brazilian personal hygiene, perfumery, and cosmetics industry has presented a trade surplus, standing out as the only segment within the chemical sector to keep this performance.

“Despite the positive balance, our exports to Argentina – one of our main trading partners – are below their potential,” emphasizes João Carlos Basilio, executive president of ABIHPEC. “In 2024, we hope to resume our exports to the country with greater predictability, following the redefinition and political stability in Argentina.”

In 2023, Hair Products were the major exports, reaching a value of USD 200.2 million, up 8.9%. This category represents 22% of the total exported from January to December. Soaps and Oral Hygiene products round up the podium, with an increase of 26% (USD 186.6 million) and 6.3% (USD 95.7 million), respectively. Fragrances stood out with significant growth of almost 39% in exports, even though they only occupy the sixth position in the overall ranking.
