Argentina could resume copper exports in 2026, with estimated exports of USD 10 billion, and by 2030, become one of the top ten global players, indicated a study by the Rosario Stock Exchange (BCR).

The report emphasized that “in a world rapidly moving towards electrification and electromobility, copper has become a strategically important mineral.”

“This scenario presents a unique opportunity for the country, which has enormous but still not fully exploited potential. According to official projections, Argentina could resume copper exports in 2026 and, by 2030, with estimated exports of USD 10 billion, become one of the top ten players globally,” stated the BCR.

It noted that “global demand for copper is booming, driven primarily by its essential role in green technologies such as electric cars and renewable energy.” It specified that “currently, Chile and Peru lead in copper production and exports, accounting for more than a third of global production and over half of global exports.”

“This context puts Argentina in a strategic position to enter the game. Despite Argentina’s last copper production in 2018 with the closure of the Bajo de la Alumbrera mine, the country hosts over 20 copper projects in development,” emphasized the Rosario Stock Exchange.

It indicated that “these projects represent a significant opportunity to revitalize the copper industry in Argentina and contribute significantly to the national economy.”

According to official data, Argentina is expected to resume copper exports in 2026, with an initial projection of USD 814 million.

By 2030, “the projections are even more promising,” with estimated exports of around USD 10 billion.

These figures “would position Argentina among the top ten copper exporters in the world,” the report highlights.

Challenges

However, the analysis pointed out that “the development of the copper industry in Argentina is not without challenges,” it considered that “years of exploration, government authorizations, and financing are required to mature these projects.”

Nevertheless, it emphasized that “the potential reward is significant, not only in economic terms but also in Argentina’s contribution to meeting the growing global demand for copper in the context of energy transition.”

“Argentina is at a crucial crossroads. With proper strategic planning and necessary investment, the country has the potential to become a key player in the global copper market. This is a decisive moment for Argentina’s economic and energy future and an opportunity that should not be missed,” concluded the report.
