Container transport giant Maersk has new plans for Brazil

You may have heard about the Danish conglomerate Maersk – or seen its containers. The group is the largest maritime transport company globally, consolidating brands such as Hamburg-Süd and Aliança under its structure. The company is responsible for 70% of the volume transported at the container terminal at the Port of Santos.

With such a solid presence in maritime transport, the company wants to digitize the entire logistics chain process in the country (both inland and by sea) and become one of the top five companies to provide this type of service by 2025.

“Today, Brazil has a very fragmented process. We are developing new digital solutions that are currently lacking. Our customers can then view the entire process and can become even more efficient. Our focus is on those who need logistics outsourcing and complete operations management,” says Robbert van Trooijen, Vice President of Maersk Latin America and the Caribbean, to EXAME.

To make this plan a reality, the company is investing in warehouses to be store goods until customs clearance for their export.  It is also studying acquisition opportunities and wants to popularize the NewNav control tower in Brazil. This will enable complete connectivity between all logistics points, including inventory supplies. This would also be a beneficial service for other sectors, such as the retail sector.

In the graph below, compiled with Datamar data, we can see that Maersk has a 32.8% market share in Brazil:

Besides offering point-to-point visibility, the company wants to manage products end-to-end, optimize truck routes according to the receipt of goods, and manage warehouses that can stock products efficiently – and with easier and faster access to where the cargo needs to arrive, etc. Maersk models the data and, as a result, it is possible to obtain procedures for each type of situation, preventing errors.

The company already has global customers for these services. “Three or four are testing this globally, and some of them are in Latin America. We are now going to launch this service in Brazil”, says Robbert.
