The construction at the COFCO Internacional Brasil terminal in the Porto Valongo area started on Tuesday, August 8th, at the Port of Santos. The outlook is that this new terminal dedicated to solid bulk goods will initiate its operations in 2025, with full-fledged activity slated for 2026. This terminal is projected to become one of the largest in the Port of Santos, significantly bolstering the capacity to handle up to 14 million tonnes.

COFCO International Brasil secured the rights to operate the STS 11 terminal through a successful auction held last year. The Chinese firm will keep a 25-year concession for the fresh solid bulk terminal, entailing an investment surpassing R$764 million.

“It’s a source of immense pride to be here and see that COFCO, beyond ushering in sustainable development to Santos, fostering employment, and invigorating the economy, will also fulfill a significant aspiration for our city. The restoration project for the old terminals, which have left their imprint on our city’s history, will propel them into new roles, such as tourism, generating more job opportunities,” affirmed Mayor Rogério Santos.

His reference was to the Valongo Park initiative, a collaborative effort between the city hall, COFCO, and the Santos Port Authority (APS), which should rejuvenate the area stretching between warehouses 4 and 6. This transformation will evolve the space into a leisure and tourism hub and seamlessly integrate the port and city.

Furthering their commitment, COFCO will also plant 430 trees across Santos as part of their environmental compensation strategy.

“Asian investors are placing funds in Brazil because they recognize our logistics prowess and growth potential. This piques our interest and fuels our determination as public sector representatives to facilitate and participate in collaborative ventures of this type, fostering employment, economic vitality, and overall development,” underscored Anderson Pomini, President of APS. He also emphasized that approximately 11,000 indirect job opportunities will have been generated upon the culmination of these initiatives.

“This is a truly historic moment, and we celebrate the significance of initiating these endeavors. Our commitment and hard work have been poured into this project, and the unwavering support from APS and the Mayor of Santos has been instrumental. We hold great expectations for the successful conclusion of the STS11 project, allowing our food to reach global destinations, and for the transformation of Valongo Park,” declared Wang Yunchao, Vice-President and Director of Brazil and North America at COFCO Internacional.
