A complex operation is set to unfold in the Rio Grande Port this week. Dozens of professionals from various agencies and companies will be involved in the arrival of the P-32 platform, which is expected to reach the Rio Grande Shipyard by Friday (8), where it will be dismantled.

The undertaking involves over two months of preparation to ensure the safe displacement of the vessel, weighing over 40,000 tons, to the shipyard dock. Collaborative efforts bring together Portos RS, the Brazilian Navy, Bar Pilots, and several companies.

Between 50 and 70 individuals, including pilot professionals and ground teams, will be engaged in the movement of the P-32. Measures such as real-time monitoring of the current from Lagoa dos Patos have been implemented for the platform’s arrival.

The vessel arrives at the Rio Grande Shipyard to complete dismantling, marking the country’s largest maritime unit to undergo such a process. Gerdau, the largest Brazilian steel-producing company, acquired the platform, which enlisted Ecovix, the shipyard owner, for dismantling.

In the year-long process, Gerdau will use the metallic scrap as raw material for steel production at its Charqueadas (RS) and Sapucaia do Sul (RS) plants. Other materials will be sent for safe disposal, with almost 100% of the unit being recycled in an environmentally responsible process. Over 200 job opportunities will be generated through the operation.

In addition to the P-32, the P-33 platform is also slated for dismantling at the shipyard. The auction results were announced on the 1st, with Gerdau emerging as the winner. The vessel is expected to arrive in mid-2024, and similar to the P-32, the process will take about a year, generating 200 jobs.
