CODEBA has resumed wood handling at the Port of Ilhéus with the unloading of 23,000 tons of wood on the 26th of October destined for the Port of Aveiro, in Portugal.  The export of raw wood to Europe had been suspended since March 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The export of wood to Portugal is an important activity for the Port of Ilhéus. The resumption of operations confirms that the sector remains active and that commercial operations involving the commodity have overcome the restrictions of the pandemic period and are now returning to their normal pace, fostering job creation in Brazil and the generation of new revenues for the region”, explains Carlos Autran Amaral, CEO of Companhia das Docas da Bahia (CODEBA), the port authority responsible for the administration of the Port of Ilhéus.

By the end of this year, there will be a total of four operations involving the commodity. Three of them in the round-trip style, in which transport to Aveiro will use the same ship, the Esperance Bay. The fourth trip can be made by a larger ship, in case there is excess cargo.

Even with the export of wood temporarily suspended, YTD figures until August show that the Port of Ilhéus registered 209,859 tons of soy, 75,727 tons of nickel, and 55,933 tons of cocoa handling, an increase of 141.72% compared to the 2020 YTD from the same period.
