The Mexican government has given the green light for the entry of Brazilian pork shipments that were either at sea or held in local ports, according to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). These products had been held since mid-November when a first-instance decision by a Mexican court prohibited the importation of Brazilian pork. The Ministry of Agriculture estimated that around $60 million worth of Brazilian pork was on its way to Mexico at the end of November, awaiting clearance.

In a statement, ABPA mentioned that the first batch of shipments had been cleared, but the judicial measure remains valid for new ones. “At the same time, the entity remains optimistic about the quick reversal of the judicial decision that temporarily suspended pork imports from Brazil to Mexico,” the association said. ABPA estimates that Brazilian pork shipments to Mexico totaled 5,000 tons per month before the interruption.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock confirmed that the injunction is still in effect. “However, the Ministry and Brazilian producer associations have received indications from the Mexican government that the judicial decision preventing meat exports to the country may be lifted in the coming weeks. In other words, the Mexican court could issue a ruling reversing the previous decision, allowing the two countries to resume the trade flow of these products,” the Ministry said in a statement.

At the end of November, a Ministry delegation and exporters’ representatives were in Mexico negotiating with local authorities to lift the embargo. The National Service of Health, Safety, and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica, the Mexican sanitary agency) requested the annulment of the injunction preventing the importation of Brazilian pork.
