The Chinese group Brasil CRT, based in Minas Gerais, signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday (11) to construct a Deepwater Port and the New City of Mataraca on the Northern Coast of Paraíba. The investment volume, in partnership with international investors, is expected to reach R$ 9 trillion.

The memorandum of understanding was signed during a ceremony in the municipality after three years of negotiations between Mayor Egberto Madruga (PSB) and landowners, including Usina Vale Verde.

The implementation of the Port and the Planned City will cover an area of 1 million and 100 thousand square meters (11 thousand hectares).

The Mataraca region was chosen after studies in three other areas of Paraíba: Baía da Traição, Lucena, and Pitimbu. Mataraca was the region that showed the best marine characteristics, including proximity to the coast, topography, and logistical potential.

Port and City of Mataraca

At the event, Chinese entrepreneurs stated that the Port and the City are expected to accommodate a population of 250,000 inhabitants but can host up to 1 million tourists simultaneously.

Brasil CRT intends to build the port of Mataraca on a beach between Barra do Camaratuba and Guaju. It will be made in an “offshore” style, meaning it will be “off the shore” and not directly connected to the land. An example in the Northeast is the port of Pecém in Ceará.

The international city of Mataraca will include residential, commercial, industrial, service, leisure, university, school, port, hospital, stadium, gymnasium, public buildings, clinics, businesses, shopping, industries, modern transportation, metro, agriculture, among other benefits that will contribute to the growth of the north coast region and the state of Paraíba.

The project is expected to generate more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction. When the Port and the City are operational, measuring the number of people working will be impossible.

The group leading the project has expertise in building Smart Cities, having participated in constructing cities in Dubai, Qatar, Singapore, and Egypt, among others, and intends to implement the same business model in other states.
