The customs office at the port of Shanghai is about to release the first shipment of Brazilian beef for entry into China since the beginning of the Chinese embargo on the Brazilian product, on September 4th. The information was disclosed by Agrifatto, which clarified that there had already been a green light for carrying out the “clearance” of a shipment, which had not been happening.

According to the consultancy, the shipment departing from Tocantins was certified on August 26 and shipped on September 10th. There are another 21 requests for release in the customs queue which could be denied, the company points out.

Lots from Mato Grosso, for example, are more likely to be barred, since one of the two atypical cases of “mad cow” disease identified in Brazil – and which led to the suspension of exports – was registered in the state. The other was in Minas Gerais.

In an example of increased restrictions on beef produced in these two states, Russia announced in mid-September that the meat that the country imports from slaughterhouses in Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais can only be from animals that were less than 30 months old at the time of slaughter. This is already one of China’s requirements for buying Brazilian beef.

Brazil announced the voluntary suspension of exports to the Chinese in line with the sanitary protocol signed between the two countries. It was expected that the resumption of shipments would take about 15 days, as the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) attested that the cases of the disease did not pose a risk to human or animal health.
