With expressive numbers of salmon and wine sales to Brazil, Chile is renewing its strategy to increase and diversify sales of commodities to the largest country in South America.

The strategy is spearheaded by ProChile, an arm of the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is looking into expanding its operating network in Brazil with new offices in Brasília and Belo Horizonte and strengthening digital avenues to increase trade and market events to promote an export basket that ranges from olive oil to pork, with onion and garlic in between.

The goal of diversifying exports, though, will not make ProChile lose sight of the country’s flagship in Brazil. Salmon and trout sales, which currently lead the list, generated US$ 673 million between January and October, up 12.4% from the same period last year. Corales believes that these sales can grow.

In terms of agribusiness exports, Brazil is Chile’s third-largest export destination. The US, number one in this list, brought in US$ 5.4 billion in the first ten months of this year, which represented a growth of 29.9%, according to data from ProChile.

Wines are another important Chilean export to Brazil. From January to October, these sales increased by 4.5% to US$ 159 million, indicating that diversification is gaining traction, as evidenced by increased sales of sparkling wines.

For ProChile, it would also be possible to increase sales of onion and garlic to Brazil, which is already the second-largest consumer of these items; exports totaled more than US$ 10 million and US$ 4 million, respectively, in the first ten months of the year.

These are more difficult markets to access due to Brazilian producers’ resistance, but nothing is impossible. Even in the case of pork, a product that Brazil excels in exporting, there is room for increased Chilean sales.

Brazil is the fourth most important destination market for Chilean exports considering all products.
