Chile suspended its chicken meat exports this week for 28 days after detecting its first case of avian flu in an industrial environment.

The incident, recorded at an Agrosuper meatpacker in Rancagua, forced the authorities to cull 40,000 birds.

However, Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) spokesman Carlos Orellana believes the event’s impacts will be limited, and the situation will be resolved quickly. “We hope Chile will regain its status as an avian flu-free country shortly,” he said.

The first case of H5N1 was detected in Chile last December, and since then, the virus has spread to almost all regions, but exclusively in migratory birds and some specimens of sea lions and penguins.

However, the contagion has now occurred in a commercial facility, so it was necessary to adopt sanitary measures to prevent its spread.

This week, the authorities reiterated to the population the importance of not touching sick or dead birds or marine mammals and to notify the SAG of any suspected case.

On the continent, the first cases of the disease were recorded in North America at the end of 2021 through migratory species that crossed the Atlantic from Europe and then spread to countries in Central and South America.
