Brazilian construction company Carioca Engenharia has been contracted by ICTSI Rio, an International Container Terminal Services subsidiary, to expand the dock of its port in Rio de Janeiro. The project will extend the dock by nearly 100 meters, increasing the port’s capacity to accommodate more and larger vessels.

This contract reinforces the engineering company’s position in Brazilian port projects, showcasing the company’s strength in the sector. “We have more than 50 port projects in our portfolio, 300 kilometers of piles in Brazil, and 150,000 square meters of harborage,” said Daniel Rizzotti, Carioca’s CEO.

One of the critical factors that set Carioca apart is its use of new tools for foundation works on ports and bridges in areas with great depth. The unique characteristics of the soil, on land and underwater, necessitated the introduction of new techniques during the foundation phase to install tubular and precast piles of up to 60 meters in length. To achieve this, the company employs a floating pile driver called Ramlift, a Carioca Engenharia-owned device measuring approximately 45 meters in length, 17 meters in width, and over 50 meters in tower height. Its driving energy is over 20 ton-meters, and is equipped with hydraulic or pneumatic hammers powered by steam or compressed air. This device will be used in the Rio de Janeiro port project.

Another significant advantage of using the Ramlift is the time it takes to install piles, which can be done in just a few hours. A conventional device would take more than a day to complete each pile, and segment welding would be done at sea, stripping the quality assurance provided by welding on the construction site.

“Considering the peculiarities of the soil, both on land and underwater, and the other characteristics of the project, the piles are essential to ensure the project’s safety. This makes choosing the appropriate equipment for the foundation phase essential,” explained Gustavo Maschietto, Carioca’s Director of Engineering and Operations.
