Canada to expand the range of Brazilian meatpackers allowed to export pork

The Canadian front for Brazilian pork exports is becoming an important avenue for the sector’s future, which has suffered from international trade in 2022.
A week after certifying three Brazilian meatpackers to export pork to Canada, the country granted new licenses to two other firms. According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), there are now five meatpackers from Brazil authorized to ship pork to Canada.
The two new firms contemplated by Canada are Pamplona Alimentos and the Joaçaba plant in Santa Catarina of the Cooperativa Central Aurora de Alimentos.
See below the track record of Brazilian pork shipments on a monthly basis from January 2020 to April 2022. The data is from DataLiner.

Despite being the third-largest global exporter of pork, Canada also demands substantial imports, about 250 thousand tonnes in 2021.
Canada’s decision strengthens the presence of Brazilian animal protein in North America, where the transit of goods between Mexico, the United States, and Canada is not subject to tariffs due to trade agreements.
