The never-seen-before operational results obtained at the Port of Imbituba attest to the port complex’s role as one of the main drivers of economic development in the south of the state of Santa Catarina.

In the last ten years, Imbituba more than tripled its cargo throughput, with a performance that comes accompanied by operation records, portfolio expansion, and investments.

SCPAR Porto de Imbituba alone, the port authority, plans to inject BRL 147 million into upgrading the port’s infrastructure over the next five years.

The Imbituba port complex currently comprises three berths and seven terminals leased to private companies, in addition to areas available for new investments.

This year’s forecast is to see a throughput of more than 7 million tonnes handled, a new historical record for the port.

Imports dominate the operations, with 47.7% of the volume movement recorded from January to September.

Notwithstanding, the current scenario points to a gradual increase in the share of agricultural and mineral exports at the Port of Imbituba.

Between loading and unloading different types of cargo (bulk, container, and general cargo), dry bulk represents the largest share, approximately 80% of the total amount this year.

The conclusion of the BR-285 highway is among the factors that should boost cargo movement in the coming years, as the road will create a logistical corridor that will facilitate the flow of agricultural produce in the state.

With the work completed and the improvements in the port, an increase of around 30% in the throughput of Imbituba is expected.

Inside the port’s limits, the most important work planned by SCPAR is the recovery, reinforcement, and expansion of Pier 3.

In addition, private parties should also inject money into the port. Some examples are the R$ 25 million foreseen in the modernization of the Liquid Bulk Terminal, which had its lease signed this year with Fertisanta, the purchase of a new MHC (Mobile Harbor Crane) crane by the operator Granéis Imbituba, which should arrive by December, and increased towage services with the arrival of the tugboat barge SAAM Tapajó, owned by SAAM Towage.

Important projects are also beginning to move forward in the neighborhood. For example, the Export Processing Zone (ZPE Imbituba) is taking shape, with construction set to start in 2023 after preparing the basic plan to implement an industrial condominium. Currently, the proposal aims to qualify 59 of the 102 available hectares.

At this rate of investments and operating results, the Port of Imbituba is preparing to expand its participation in the logistics of the South of Brazil. This scenario reverberates in the socioeconomic development of the port surroundings and region.
