Portos do Paraná, a public company that manages Paraná state ports, set a new record in February 2024. A total of 5,350,437 tonnes were handled at the ports of Antonina and Paranaguá. This historic record surpasses the previous one, with a 5% increase compared to February 2022 (5,075,118 t).

“The significant backlog in cargo movement from last year continues to influence the results in 2024. Because of this, we expect cargo handling to remain at a high pace in the first semester, regardless of any crop failures this year,” commented Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.

In exports, soybean and sugar cargoes saw the highest movement rates in the month. Soybean grain grew by 172% compared to 2023, rising from 453,595 tonnes to 1,235,113 in 2024. Meanwhile, sugar went from 222,452 tonnes in 2023 to 496,978 this year, representing a 123% increase.

In imports, fertilizers had the highest throughput: from 803,594 in 2023 to 924,712 tonnes this year, representing a 15% increase. Currently, Portos do Paraná is the main gateway for this commodity in the country, accounting for 31.6% of national movement.

Another noteworthy trend was the throughput recorded movement in the first two months of 2024. “In January and February, we saw a 19% growth in overall cargo movement. That is, 10.4 million tons this year compared to 8.7 million tons in 2023. With our logistics intelligence strategies, we expect the growth in movement to remain steady in the coming months,” pointed out Gabriel Vieira, Operations Director of Portos do Paraná.
