Brazilian turkey market experiences sharp export growth in 2023

The Brazilian turkey meat market is experiencing significant export growth during the first eight months of 2023, with notable volume and foreign exchange revenue increases.

According to data from Agrostat Brasil, a Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock branch, Brazilian turkey meat exports reached 47,523 tonnes, resulting in foreign exchange earnings of approximately US$ 144.348 million. These figures represent a 31% increase in volume and an 18.6% increase in foreign exchange revenue compared to the same period the previous year.

Top domestic turkey producers

The top turkey producing and exporting states in Brazil were:

  • Rio Grande do Sul: Leading the exports, this state recorded revenue of US$ 63.949 million and shipped 18,346 tons.
  • Santa Catarina: In second place, Santa Catarina reported revenue of US$ 50.526 million and exported 18,016 tons.
  • Paraná: In third place, Paraná achieved revenue of US$ 29.807 million and exported 11,145 tons. Notably, Paraná exhibited significant growth compared to the previous year, with a 15.8% increase in exported volume.

Regarding the leading destinations for turkey meat exports, the following countries stand out (volume in tons and foreign exchange revenue):

  • Mexico: Imported over 11,000 tons, resulting in revenue of US$ 41.7 million.
  • South Africa: Received 8,284 tons, generating revenue of US$ 13.911 million.
  • Netherlands: Imported 7,755 tons, resulting in revenue of US$ 39.357 million.
  • Chile: Received 3,294 tons, with revenue of US$ 13.498 million.
  • Peru: Imported 3,225 tons, generating revenue of US$ 6.888 million.
  • Benin: Received 1,649 tons, with revenue of US$ 2.712 million.

It’s important to note that the average Brazilian shopper consumes approximately half a kilogram of turkey meat annually. Furthermore, the expansion of turkey meat export destinations significantly contributes to sector growth.

Average Prices

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that the average price achieved for “in natura” turkey meat, which represents the majority of exports (87.4% of the total), was approximately US$ 2,737.03 per ton. This means an 18.7% reduction compared to the average value of US$ 3,368.63 per ton obtained in the previous year.

Brazil’s turkey meat market continues to demonstrate its growth potential, with solid export performance and diversification of destinations. With increasing international demand and the recognized quality of Brazilian turkey meat, the sector is positioned to continue its growth in the coming years.
