Brazilian ports see 2.1% throughput climb in the 3Q22

The cargo throughput in Brazilian ports increased by 2.1% in the third quarter (3Q22). During the period, a volume of 323 million tonnes was handled at public and private port facilities. In total, 905.6 million tonnes passed through Brazilian maritime and fluvial terminals during the year. Nonetheless, the result is 1.4% lower than in 2021, a record year for cargo throughput in the country.

Public ports saw an 8.9% increase, accounting for 114.9 million tonnes transported. Santos saw a growth of 22.7%, but the highlight was Santarém, with a rise of 89%, followed by São Sebastião, 69.1%, and Suape, 30.7%.

Private Use Terminals (TUP) saw a throughput drop of 1.3% after handling 209 million tonnes between July and September. Among the TUPs that stood out the most, the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal recorded a drop of 5.2%. On the other hand, the terminals in Tubarão and São Sebastião handled 8.2% and 12% YoY.

In terms of navigation types, long-distance increased by 1.4% in the quarter. The highlight, however, remains inland navigation (via rivers), which increased by 25.5%. On the other hand, cabotage fell 0.7% from the previous year.

Goods

In the third quarter, the movement of agricultural products in the ports was 79.4 million tonnes, which ensured an increase of 14.9%. Santos, Paranaguá, and Itaqui are the main Brazilian ports of entry and exit for these goods. Corn grew by 75.7%, totaling 26.4 million tonnes handled. Sugar (11.7%) and rice (183.2%) rose in the same period. On the other hand, soybeans and fertilizers fell by 13.8% and 19.7%.

As for fuels, the movement of oil and derivatives, mineral coal, and petroleum gas reduced in the quarter. On the other hand, ethanol (fuel) increased by 29.4% and oils from mineral products by 46.2%.

The movement of mineral products totaled 121.2 million tonnes in three months, a 1% increase. However, the main product, iron ore, fell by 1.1%, while bauxite (26%), iron, and steel (6%) had a positive balance compared to the same quarter in 2021.

Industry goods increased by 3.1%. Imports and exports of automobiles, tractors and accessories for motor vehicles increased by 9%, 8.9%, and 21%, respectively. Box body semi-trailer transport also increased by 2.6%.

Container transport increased by 4.3%, totaling 3.1 million TEU from July to September (or 34.3 million tonnes, an increase of 1.8%). Long-haul navigation (8.1%) and inland navigation (18.3%) saw increases. Cabotage decreased by 2.6%.
