Brazil’s government will reinforce security systems at Brazilian ports and airports. In a meeting on Monday (25), the Ministers of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, and Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, began discussing the creation and implementation of a national security plan at aerodromes and port facilities throughout Brazil.

The goal is to intensify the drug fight against trafficking and deter other illicit activities. Representatives from both ministries have been assigned to draft the plan, which is expected to be presented by next Thursday, the 5th.

“We have initiated a dialogue so that, collectively with the Federal Police and other institutions, we can build a new plan to combat drug and weapon trafficking, which is increasing crime,” said Costa Filho.

For Minister Flávio Dino, the ongoing violence in Brazilian cities is directly linked to what happens at ports and airports in Brazil. “We will focus on expanding this joint action to involve the Navy, Federal Revenue, and other agencies. Soon, we will announce more concrete steps,” he said.

Secure Airports

In June, the new Federal Government launched the “Secure Airports” program to enhance passenger and baggage protection at major Brazilian airports. The program began implementation at Guarulhos International Airport with an initial investment of R$40 million.

Among the measures taken in the first phase of the initiative is an increase in the number of security cameras, individualized access key identification for the baggage system in Terminal 3 (international), restricted access to cell phones and tablets in strategic locations, centralized entry to the cargo terminal, and biometric access for employees to restricted areas.

Other actions are planned over the next 18 months of the program, including an automated explosive detection system and improvements to the baggage transport system.

Funding

The ministers also discussed using security funds to implement Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) in ports that do not yet have the technology. VTMIS is an electronic navigation aid system with the capacity to monitor maritime traffic.

Currently, only two ports in the country have operational VTMIS and VTS systems accredited by the Navy: the Port of Vitória and the Port of Açu.

“In addition to the port area, the system brings benefits to the surrounding area since it operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and facilitates the exchange of information with public authorities such as the Federal Police, Federal Revenue, Military Police, municipal guards, and other security agencies,” explained Minister Costa Filho.
