Brazilian papaya exports drop year on year

Week 202323

Brazilian papaya exports plunged in May, especially compared to the previous year. According to government data, the volume shipped was 3,330 tonnes in the month, down 3% compared to April and 21% compared to May 2022.

According to agents consulted by Hortifruti/Cepea, the deficit was related to the limited supply in May, the attractive prices on the domestic market, and the European economic crisis, which encourages buyers to focus on locally grown fruits.

In June, as the harvest continues, the supply of Brazilian papaya for exports is expected to expand alongside an improvement in fruit quality. It is important to highlight that papaya, being an exotic fruit, still possesses an untapped potential for greater market penetration on the international stage. Notably, there has been a recent emphasis on exploring opportunities to establish trade partnerships with new countries.
