Week 202235

The security forces involved in Operation Agatha, coordinated by the Brazilian Navy, apprehended another 30kg of cocaine hidden in the hull of a vessel anchored in the Paranagua Bay on Saturday, August 27.

The narcotic was found in the compartment known as the Sea Chest. This was the third apprehension carried out by the task force recently on the coast of Parana.

Accusation

The Brazilian Federal Police maritime division and the Military Police Coastal Patrol were informed that on Friday, August 26, a suspicious boat was seen near the vessel Water Ride, which was 10km off the coast.

Following the inspection procedures in the region, diving teams were called, and a package with cocaine tablets was found in the completely submerged compartment.

Approximately 30kg of the drug were found and seized.

The police saw no suspicious vessels near the waters where the carrier Water Ride was bound for the European continent.

The confiscated drug was sent to the Federal Police headquarters in Paranaguá.

Operation Agatha

Operation Agatha aims to curb cross-border illicit acts through interagency cooperation on the coast of Paraná under the coordination of the Brazilian Navy with the help of the Federal Police, the Federal Revenue Service, the Military Police of Paraná, and the Chico Mendes Insititute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).

Third apprehension

This was the third cocaine seizure executed during Operation Agatha in the Port of Paranagua.

Over the past week, teams have found packages with cocaine on two ships that were in the port terminal and the maneuvering area.

In the first seizure, the Navy took under possession 46 kilos of cocaine, and, in the second, another 159 kilos were captured.

Sea Chest

The compartment where the cocaine was found is called the “Sea Chest,” an opening located in a ship’s hull that remains submerged at all times and can only be accessed by divers.

International traffickers hire experienced professionals to place narcotics loads in the compartment. The procedure requires divers to remain submerged for more than 1 hour.
