Brazilian fertilizer market shows marginal decline in Q1 2023

In the first quarter of 2023, fertilizer deliveries to the Brazilian market reached 8.5 million tonnes, representing a slight reduction of 1.2% compared to the same period in 2022, according to the National Association for the Diffusion of Fertilizers (ANDA). This decline was further emphasized in March, as deliveries dropped by 16.2% to 2.4 million tonnes compared to the corresponding month in the previous year.

Mato Grosso, the largest state in Brazil’s agricultural heartland, maintained its position as the leading contributor to the market, accounting for 25.1% of the total deliveries during the analyzed period. With a substantial volume of 2.14 million tonnes, Mato Grosso was followed by Goiás (1.12 million tonnes), Paraná (1 million tonnes), Minas Gerais (885 thousand tonnes), and São Paulo (768 thousand tonnes).

National output

The national production of intermediate fertilizers experienced a decline in March 2023, with 590 thousand tonnes produced, marking a 10.7% decrease compared to the same month in 2022. Looking at the cumulative results for the first quarter, production amounted to 1.70 million tonnes, representing an 8.8% reduction compared to the same period last year when 1.86 million tonnes were produced.

Imports

Imports of intermediate fertilizers also witnessed a decline, with March 2023 recording imports of 2.55 million tonnes, reflecting a 3.7% decrease compared to the corresponding month in the previous year. Throughout the first quarter, imports amounted to 7.74 million tonnes, indicating an 11.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2022, during which 8.74 million tonnes were imported.

The port of Paranaguá, known as the main gateway for fertilizer imports, received 2 million tonnes during the first quarter of 2023. However, this figure represented a significant decline of 26.5% compared to the same period in 2022, when 2.84 million tonnes were unloaded. Despite the reduction, the terminal accounted for 27% of the total imported fertilizers.
