Brazil’s Secretary of Agricultural Defense of the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA), Carlos Goulart, and South Korea’s Director of Imported Food Safety Policy at the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), Woo Young-taek , signed a memorandum of understanding on the electronic certification of livestock products. The memorandum will reduce the time required to issue documentation while keeping security in the operations of the two countries.

At the opening of the virtual meeting, the Secretary of Agricultural Defense highlighted that the document’s signing represents progress in the technical cooperation between Brazil and the Republic of Korea that will allow sharing of knowledge and experiences to improve processes and services in international trade.

This MoU illustrates the commitment of our countries to create a more welcoming and effective business environment for all. Both of our countries are responding to the demands for agility, safety, and transparency in the processes that ensure the quality and health of products exported from Brazil to South Korea by optimizing the process, reducing bureaucracy, and increasing efficiency in the certification of products of animal origin,” said Goulart.

Brazil is the third country with which MFDS implemented an electronic certification memorandum of understanding for imports of livestock products.

Woo Young-taek highlighted the role of Brazil as an important trading partner since, currently, 90% of Korea’s chicken imports come from Brazil.

“Now that we have reached an understanding, it is expected that more than 8,000 paper health certificates—including those for Brazilian chicken—will be processed each year electronically. The memorandum will further boost Koreans’ trust in Brazilian livestock products imported into our nation,” he predicted.
