The Brazilian National Agency of Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ) contributed to the production of a document submitted by Brazil to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on Monday, the 21st, regarding the Presence of Women in the National Waterway Sector.

Titled “Women’s presence in the Brazilian maritime sector: Research on gender equality conducted in Brazil by ANTAQ and WISTA,” the document was submitted to the IMO by the Brazilian Navy as a contribution to the 73rd session of the Technical Cooperation Committee (TCC 73), which will take place from October 16th to 19th. The agenda of the session focuses on empowering women in the maritime sector.

The document is part of a partnership established between ANTAQ and WISTA Brazil in March 2022 for cooperation in developing studies and sharing information about the Brazilian waterway sector. The publication of the results aims to deepen the understanding of the waterway sector in relation to its workforce. It can also serve as a baseline for companies in the sector to enhance gender equality policies.

The IMO is an agency of the United Nations (UN) structure that provides mechanisms for cooperation among governments and establishes international standards for maritime safety and navigation efficiency. It also defines standards for preventing and controlling maritime pollution caused by ships.

The Technical Cooperation Committee, on the other hand, consists of all IMO member states and was created in 1969 as a subsidiary body of the IMO Council, institutionalized in 1984. The TCC 73 is responsible for analyzing any matter related to the execution of technical cooperation projects in which the IMO acts as the executing or cooperating agency, as well as any other matters related to the organization’s activities in the domain of technical cooperation.

The informative document is the result of research conducted under the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association – WISTA Brazil. The aim of this agreement is to establish a partnership for cooperation in developing studies and sharing non-confidential information about the Brazilian waterway sector.

Part of the agenda of TCC 73 is the empowerment of women in the maritime sector. This document aims to publicize the partnership and sector data related to the topic.

This action represents an important collaboration by the agency for Brazil’s involvement in the IMO. Not only does the submission of documents foster discussion among the organization’s member states, but it also serves as a strategic element in consolidating Brazil’s representation within the institution.

Flávia Takafashi, the director of ANTAQ who led the process resulting in the gender equity survey within the agency, expressed gratitude for the partnership between ANTAQ and WISTA, highlighting the importance and innovation brought by the document.
