The Brazilian Cattle Insemination Association (Asbia) has released the Index Asbia report, featuring data on the Brazilian bovine genetics market in the second quarter of 2023. The report highlights the significant growth in exports of beef cattle semen. The association’s leadership celebrated the 13% increase compared to the first half of 2022.

“Brazi’s main partners in the beef cattle genetics market are neighboring countries like Bolivia, Paraguay, and Colombia. The latter has always been a major importer of our dairy cattle genetics. This growing international interest in our beef cattle industry sends a message that tropical breeds predominant in Brazil, such as Nelore, have been evolving extremely positively, demonstrating the ever-increasing potential for both quantity and quality of meat production, contributing to the goal of feeding the world,” explains Cristiano Botelho, an executive at Asbia.

In the first half of the year, 2.3 million doses of semen were imported, while the total produced was approximately 8.3 million. “Sales to end customers accounted for 9.2 million semen doses. The exports of genetic material for dairy and beef cattle summed up to around 408,000 doses,” reports Botelho. The accumulated amount in the service model, which involves contracting the collection and processing of genetic material from the cattle owner, stood at about 953,000 doses.

The 13.6% increase in exports of beef cattle genetics represents a growth of 25,459 doses shipped in the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. The total volume of doses sent abroad in the first half of 2023 was 211,768, whereas 2022 closed the first half of the year with 186,309.

The volume of doses collected and imported in the year’s first half was 7.3 million and 715,000, respectively. Sales of canisters in the domestic market amounted to 1,403 units up to 20 liters and 978 units with more than 20 liters. Under the service model, 942,411 semen doses were delivered. Finally, sales to end customers represented 6.4 million doses.

Dairy Cattle Genetics

According to the Cepea survey, the dairy cattle sector showed an importing trend over the six-month period. There was a 4.2% growth compared to the first half of 2022, an increase of 66,000 doses from other countries. Additionally, sales to end customers—where producers acquire doses for reproduction and improvement in their herds—also showed an optimistic scenario.

The production of genetic material for dairy cattle amounted to just over 1 million doses. Moreover, 197,000 doses of this type were sent to other countries. In service contracts, 11,000 doses were delivered. As for producers who were classified as end customers, they received 2.7 million doses. “This is an increase of almost 12% compared to the first six months of last year,” concludes the executive.
