Brazil port sector sees 799.7 mln t throughput in 2022

Brazil’s National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) released on October 19 updated data on the cargo throughput registered in the ports across the country. According to the agency’s online report, the port sector saw a throughput of 281.2 million tonnes between July and August this year, registering a negative variation of 0.12%. Year-to-date, the ports registered 799.7 million tonnes.

From July to August, public ports grew by 10.3%, with emphasis on the Port of Santarém/PA (+105%), Suape/PE (+25%), Rio de Janeiro /RJ (+24.1%) and Santos/SP (+23.3%). On the other hand, private terminals saw a 5.1% de-growth over the same period. The highlights in this category are the Madre de Deus/BA Waterway Terminal (+13.8%), São Sebastião/SP Waterway Terminal (+9.3%), Guaíba Island Terminal (+8.2%), and the Port of Açu/RJ (+4.5%).

As for types of cargo, containers (0.8%) and general cargo (5.7%) observed a positive balance in the months of July and August. Only the liquid and gaseous bulk sectors registered a decrease compared to the previous year, 12.3%.

Goods

In the months of July and August, agricultural products accounted for 55.8 million tonnes processed at Brazilian ports, with 68.4% of the cargo destined for export. Such a figure represents a growth of 13.9% compared to the same period in 2021. Among the main agricultural commodities were: corn (+58.1%), sugar (+21.6%), and pulp (+ 17.5). Soybeans and fertilizers fell by over 12%.

Overall, the movement of fuels (crude oils) fell by 14.5% at the beginning of this half of the year, with only 49.9 million tonnes transported. The transport operations of petroleum oil and derivatives (crude oil) decreased by 14%  over the same period in 2021, reaching 31 million tonnes. Oil derivatives, on the other hand, fell by 5.2%, with a movement of 13.6 million tonnes. Ethanol grew by 23.8%, and fuels, oils, and mineral products increased by 52.7%.

There was also a 3.2% increase in container transport, totaling 2 million TEU from July to August (or 22.6 million tonnes, with a 0.8% increase). Long-distance navigation (1.4%), cabotage (0.2%), and inland navigation (8.2%) all increased.

Industrial goods also scored positive results in July and August, with 5 million tonnes handled and a 4.9% increase. Automobile transport increased by 10.4%, while tractor transport increased by 23.1%. During this time, car accessories increased by 20%.
