Brazil improved its performance in exports in 2021, according to data from the study “Performance of Industry in the World,” released on the 14th by the CNI (National Confederation of Industry), albeit it lost position in the world ranking in both production and exports.

On a global scale, Brazil grew from 0.77% in 2022 to 0.82% in manufacturing industry exports. However, such an increase is not enough to increase or maintain the country’s position in the ranking, bringing Brazil down one position, from the 30th to the 31st place, losing ground to Indonesia.

“To reverse this loss of share in industrial goods exports, we need a national foreign trade strategy that addresses long-standing competitiveness obstacles like bureaucracy and tax residues in exports while also expanding and improving our networks of trade agreements to avoid double taxation with strategic partners,” says Constanza Negri, manager of International Trade and Integration.

As for Brazilian output, the decline in world share was from 1.31% in 2020 to 1.28% in 2021, according to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Consequently, Brazil was bested by Turkey and dropped to the 15th position in the ranking.

Amidst a 5.3% drop in global exports in 2020, the CNI estimated a 20.4% increase in 2021. In Brazil, the decline in exports in 2020 is more than double the global average (12.6%), and the estimate for 2021 is a growth of 26.3%, which is higher than the worldwide average.

The study also identified the 11 countries that ranked Brazil’s main partners: Germany, Argentina, China, South Korea, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

According to estimates, South Korea, Germany, and Japan suffered the greatest losses in participation between 2020 and 2021. Nonetheless, the last two countries should remain in second and fourth place in the world’s largest exporters ranking, respectively. South Korea, meanwhile, is expected to drop two spots in the ranking to eighth place.

As for the countries that led the global ranking, China ranked first, and the United States ranked second and recorded the best performers in 2021. Between 2020 and 2021, the US share of global manufacturing added value grew from 16.59% to 16.76%.

On the other hand, China had the best performance in manufacturing industry production and global exports in 2021. In terms of its share of global manufacturing industry exports, China increased its share from 17.10% in 2020 to 18.43% in 2021. The country’s share of the global manufacturing industry’s added value increased from 30.08% to 30.45% between 2020 and 2021.
