Uruguay received the first cargo shipment of bone-in meat from Brazil on August 15, following a June-sealed agreement between the two countries.

The agreement was envisaged to provide a “more economical product for the Uruguayan population,” as emphasized by the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries of Uruguay, Fernando Mattos, after participating in the reception of the first batch of imports that came from Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Mato Grosso, and Rondônia, FMD-free states without vaccination.

“This is an important step. We are introducing a new product to the national market, with all the necessary guarantees. The import of bone-in meat is only allowed from countries with higher sanitary status to guarantee the biosecurity of the national herd,” said the minister.

Mattos asserted during the signing of the agreement between the two countries in June that the bone-in meat from Brazil “does not pose a risk” to Uruguayan production or the population’s health.

In addition to the resolution allowing the import of bone-in meat, the Uruguayan government has agreed to allow businesses that until now only exported to enter the market as importers of boneless and bone-in meat cuts.

Mattos estimated that more than 30 companies are in good shape to import and stressed that market players believe that “bone-in cuts can experience price drops ranging from 15% to 20%.”
