Braspell Bioenergia, which focuses on the production of wood pellets for use as biofuel, signed a protocol of intentions on December 2nd with the city of Juiz de Fora (MG) to install a logistics center, a thermoelectric plant, and a pellet factory in the municipality. The project has an estimated investment of R$ 3 billion to be spent within ten years. The expectation is to generate up to 4,000 direct and indirect jobs with the plan.

Afonso Celso Bertucci, technical director at Braspell Bioenergia, said that each pellet line will have the capacity to produce 600,000 tons per year and will require investments of around US$ 140 million. The plan foresees the implementation of up to three production lines in Juiz de Fora. The installation of a thermoelectric plant is also planned, with an investment of approximately US$ 80 million.

The company’s goal is to sell pellet production to coal-fired thermoelectric plants and domestic steel industries and for export. The factory is located on the banks of the MRS railway that connects Juiz de Fora to the port of Itaguaí (RJ). “In Itaguaí we are going to build a pellet storage terminal for export. And we are negotiating with large international steel companies to export pellets,” said the director.

The plan also includes the installation of a thermoelectric plant, with a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW), which will use forest residues (eucalyptus bark, tips, branches, and stumps) as biomass. The energy generated will supply the pellet factory and the remaining energy will be sold.
