
Avian Influenza: Brazilian Chicken Exports Hold Strong Despite International Suspensions

After 28 days under sanitary restrictions, Brazil’s poultry sector is preparing to resume exports of chicken meat and its by-products. As of last Wednesday (June 18), Brazil has resumed negotiations with the 21 countries that had imposed trade restrictions following confirmation of an avian influenza case in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, on May 19.
During this period, 21 countries fully suspended imports, including China, the country’s top buyer. Another 15 countries limited restrictions to the state of Rio Grande do Sul only.
Despite the suspensions, Brazil continued exporting chicken meat and by-products to several markets. In May, chicken exports dropped by 12.9%, totaling 393.4 thousand tonnes, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).

From January to May, total export volume reached 2.256 million tonnes, a 4.8% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
