Farmers in Argentina sold 19.5 million tonnes of maize from the 2021/22 season, including 744,000 tonnes in a single week, according to a report of the Argentine Ministry of Agriculture that features data updated through March 23.
The pace of sales of corn, which is one of Argentina’s main crops, exceeded what had been recorded last year between March 16 and March 23, 454,900 tonnes, at a time when the war between Russia and Ukraine cut global grain supplies.
Argentina is the world’s second-largest corn exporter, and its farmers are starting to harvest the 2021/22 crop, whose production the Buenos Aires Cereal Exchange estimates at 49 million tonnes.
To contain the rise in domestic food costs, the Argentine government restricted 2021/22 season corn exports to 41.6 million tonnes at the end of last year.
According to the government, in terms of 2021/22 soybeans, Argentine farmers sold 11.5 million tonnes of the harvest that will begin in the coming weeks. Last year, the sales volume was 12.8 million tonnes in the same period.
The Buenos Aires Cereal Exchange estimated soybean production at 42 million tonnes for the current campaign.
