Leaders of Argentina’s principal transport union said on the 4th that they will organize a countrywide strike to seek an increase in grain freight prices amid rising fuel expenses.

The national transport federation (Fe.Tr.A) is urging the government to adjust tariffs levied on grain producers to reflect increasing fuel costs.

“To prevent further damage to the financial wellbeing of its members, [Fe.Tr.A] is calling for a nationwide shutdown of activities from Monday, April 11 at 12:00 am (local time) until an answer is found,” said the federation in a statement.

Trucks deliver almost 86% of soybeans that go to Argentine ports; railways’ share is 13%, and ships transport the remaining 1%.

Agricultural producers in the South American country expressed concern about the lack of fuels in different production areas during the harvest season of soybeans and corn, the two main crops in Argentina, a major world exporter of grains.
