Gustavo Melella, the governor of the province of Tierra del Fuego in the extreme south of Argentina, met with the National Minister of Productive Development, Matías Kulfas, and the National Minister of Defense, Agustín Rossi, with whom he formed a working group to advance the development of the Antarctic Logistic Complex.

The project is to build an operations center linked to all the scientific activity developed in Antarctica. This will complement all the existing infrastructure, making Ushuaia a strategic location for the entire South Atlantic.

The intention is to create a logistics hub to provide services, food, scientific personnel transfers, and other items to all the Antarctic bases in the area of influence of the capital. Negotiations are advanced for new countries to start using our province as a base of operations, and this development would undoubtedly favor the arrival of new Antarctic programs”, explained Governor Melella.

The working group will be composed of the Ministries of Defense and Productive Development and the province’s government. The leader of the province announced that “the province will invite the private sector and the municipality, which will be a big step in this project.”

The Antarctic Logistics Pole is part of the actions promoted by the provincial government to expand the productive matrix and generate sustainable jobs in Tierra del Fuego.  They guarantee that the way the project is financed is “one of the determining factors.”

“In the national budget for this year 2021, US$ 270 million is budgeted for the development of the project, which is a very comprehensive amount given that the specific project is yet to be defined. Argentina is currently negotiating a 30-billion peso investment package with China for strategic developments at the national level. Within this package is the Antarctic Logistics Pole project. Therefore, dependence on foreign capital must be taken into account to develop a project with these characteristics”, he commented.
