Argentina declares water emergency in Paraná river basin

Argentina has declared a 180-day water emergency in the Paraná River basin region. According to information supplied by the state agency Télam, the government stated that the decision was made due to the “impacts and consequences that the worst drought in the last 77 years is having on the Paraná, Paraguay, and Iguaçu rivers”.
President Alberto Fernández declared a state of emergency for the provinces of Formosa, Chaco, Corrientes, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Misiones and Buenos Aires. Likewise, the decree instructed different areas of the government to adopt measures to “mitigate the consequences of the serious situation generated by the canalization”.
The current situation in Paraná has affected Argentina’s grain exports, as this sea route is responsible for around 80% of the country’s agricultural shipments. According to the Reuters agency, ships leaving the port of Rosario, on the Paraná river, are having to cut their loads by 25% due to low water levels.
