Week 202322

APM Terminals officially announced that it will cease operations at the Port of Itajaí after 22 years of activities.

The leaseholder has decided not to renew the temporary contract, which was valid for six months or until the final lease notice for the Itajai-based terminal was issued. As of June 30th, the current lessee will officially cease operations at the pier.

Following the company’s announcement, the Port of Itajaí’s superintendence confirmed that a new simplified bidding process will be launched on Monday to establish a transitional lease agreement for the operational area in berths 1 and 2 of the terminal.

The objective of this tender, initiated by the Port of Itajaí, is to find a new private partner who can ensure the continuity and volume of port operations and cargo handling during this transitional period while the Federal Government prepares the public notice for the lease of the operational areas of the Port of Itajaí.

Simplified bidding process

Interested port operators who meet the licensing and qualification requirements outlined in the public notice will be able to participate in the simplified bidding process.

To ensure proper compliance and facilitate a smooth transition in the area’s operations, strict adherence to legal procedures and prior determinations from the Federal Government, including the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPOR), National Secretariat of Ports and Waterway Transport (SNPTA), and the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ) shall be observed.

“It is crucial that immediate measures be taken to prevent inactivity in the area after APM Terminals leaves it vacant. Our goal is to establish partnerships with port operators capable of handling containers until the conclusion of the bidding process for the new lease, which we expect the Federal Government to initiate in the coming months. We will conduct a transparent and legal bidding process to ensure the prompt resumption of operations at our port,” emphasized Fábio da Veiga, the Port of Itajaí superintendent.
