Abiarroz: Rice exports reach 203.8 thousand tonnes in October
Nov, 14, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202342
In October, paddy rice exports totaled 203.8 thousand tonnes, amounting to $65.6 million, as the Brazilian Rice Industry Association (Abiarroz) reported, based on data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC).
Compared to the same month in 2022, shipments declined by approximately 46% in volume and 45% in revenue.
Year-to-date, rice exports reached 1.57 million tonnes, equivalent to $546.9 million. While shipments decreased by 5.9% from January to October in volume, there was a corresponding increase of 6.5% in revenues compared to the same period in 2022.
Beatriz Sartori, Export Manager at Abiarroz, attributes the October results to the reduction in production this year. Brazil had the smallest planted area in the last 47 years, coupled with the 2022 drought that affected the largest rice-producing state, Rio Grande do Sul.
“In addition to the production decline, the international context contributed to the volatility of rice export prices,” adds Beatriz Sartori.

Processed Rice
Shipments of processed rice, with higher added value, reached 175.2 thousand tonnes in October, totaling $52.5 million. Compared to the same month in 2022, there was an increase of 6.2% in volume and 11.3% in revenue.
Key destinations for processed rice last month included Senegal, Gambia, Peru, Guinea-Bissau, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde, Belgium, Cuba, and Barbados.
One noteworthy aspect among the destinations for processed rice was the United States. Parboiled rice shipments to that market increased more than fourfold compared to the volume from January to October 2022. Meanwhile, white rice exports to the United States grew by over 30% in 2023 compared to the same period last year.
Imports
In October, Brazilian rice imports reached 125.9 thousand tonnes, equivalent to $53.6 million. Compared to the same month in 2022, there was an increase of 32.6% in volume.
