The number of large bulk carrier vessels of approximately 38,000 deadweight tons (dwt) has passed the 1,000- vessel milestone around the world, with six new deliveries and a further 35 ordered by 2022, based on data delivered by Braemar ACM, one of the world’s largest ocean charter and brokerage companies.

In line with what was published by Splash 247, this segment now represents 40% of the worldwide handysize capacity, albeit only 4% of the total dry bulk cargo fleet in terms of DWT.

The practical size segment has evolved over the years from being in the 28,000 dwt range, then rising to 33,000/34,000 dwt before expanding further to 38,000 dwt, primarily due to an increase in demand for larger plunger stems outside Japan.

In this context, Braemar ACM informed its clients that “Unlike the Ultramax or Kamsarmax designs that emerged only 10-15 years ago, Large Handy boats have been around for several decades. However, the popularity and size of the fleet have increased considerably since around 2010.”

“With limited orders for large ships and a growing demand base for grains and smaller bulks, the outlook for these ships is encouraging,” said Braemar ACM forecasting the large-sized fleet to reach 43.4 million deadweight tons by the end of 2026, up 3.7 percent from 2021.

From 1985 to 2010, the size of the large ship fleet was constant at roughly 450 to 500 ships; however, since then, the number of vessels has more than doubled to exceed the 1,000-ship barrier, representing a total of 37.7 million dwt to date. Accordingly, 65% of the large bulk carrier fleet is less than ten years old.
