The Ministry of Economy informed on Monday, January 3rd, that the Brazilian trade balance recorded a surplus of US$ 61 billion in 2021, a value below the government’s initial forecast.

The figure is 21.1% higher than the balance of 2020, when, on the daily average, there was a surplus of US$ 50.4 billion (revised value)

A surplus is registered when exports exceed imports. When the opposite happens, that is, imports surpass exports, the result is a deficit.

In total, in 2021:

  • exports totaled US$ 280.4 billion;
  • imports totaled US$219.4 billion.

Considering the daily average, Brazil exported 34% more compared to 2020, while imports were 38.2% higher in the period.

In December, the Brazilian balance registered a surplus of R$3.9 billion, a value 39.7% higher than the one registered in the same month in 2020, considering the daily average. Throughout 2021, the balance result was only negative in the months of January and November.

The 2021 surplus took place in a year defined by the growth in the prices of “commodities” (products with a basic quotation, such as food, oil, and minerals) and by the rise of the dollar price.

Results below expectations

Despite the surplus, the result of the 2021 trade balance was below the government’s forecast.

In the last review, carried out in September, the Ministry of Economy projected a surplus of US$ 70.9 billion for 2021.

In July, the ministry predicted that the year 2021 would end with an even bigger surplus, of US$ 105.3 billion.

A decrease in the prices of products exported by Brazil and an increase in demand for imported fuels are among the reasons that led to a smaller surplus than projected, according to the government.
