The ports of Santos, Paranaguá, and Antonina resumed normal operations on Friday (04/14/2023) after experiencing restrictions on ship movements due to the powerful winds gusts caused 3’by an extratropical cyclone passing through the southern region of Brazil, as confirmed by port authorities.
In the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina, which mainly export of agricultural commodities and import fertilizers, operations were scaled back since Wednesday night due to the high wind intensity.
According to Portos do Paraná, “Currently, 15 ships are moored, engaged in loading or unloading operations across various cargo segments,” as stated in a note released on Friday.
The interruptions were implemented to ensure the safety of port workers and vessels. The port authority in Paraná did not immediately provide details regarding the specific impacts caused by the wind-related interruptions.
In Santos, the largest Brazilian exporter of commodities such as soybeans, corn, sugar, and coffee, navigation in the estuary was temporarily suspended around 9:00 am on Thursday, but it was later reopened by the Navy’s port captaincy at 2:30 pm the same day.
Arrivals and departures of ships in Santos were rescheduled for Thursday night.
An official statement confirmed that there were no significant damages to the port complex in Santos, and onshore operations continued to operate normally throughout the period.
